is often supposed to mean Germany over all, suggesting military superimposition of other nations,
whereas, in fairness, I regard it as
= "Germany, Germany, above all"
in the sense that it means the respecting their country above all others, with absolutely no suggestion of it conquering other countries!
Simply a patriotic song, no different to those of other national anthems, including our own!
To be honest, I often think that more people in our own country would do well to respect it more than they do...
naming no names, of course!
In 1806, when napoleon beat germany, it consisted of over 1000 states and looked like the picture enclosed. The ensuing weakness made for the defeat by napoleon.
In 1840 when hoffmann von fallersleben wrote this song germany had reorganised and consisted of 40 separate mini-states. The first two stanzas are about the beauty of the country, about wine and singing (how german). The third turned into the anthem inciting love for their new country.
So the german anthem is not about ruling other's countries or seas (like the british) but about loving your own country.

Quote " Europe's high standards on human rights" unquote.
Obviously the article was written by someone who is not aware of refugees should be taken in by the first "safe" country ie France. Human rights???? what about the camps around Calais, what about their human rights??? why hasn't France accepted them and given them homes and jobs as well a other EU members
No the EU sticks up its fingers to human rights, this refugee problem is ignored by most EU countries, it is only us that try and give them " human rights" over and above our own peoples needs
This really acts to confirm that the EU sees us as the unofficial and unstated dumping ground for their undesirables. It is why the French police and border authorities turn blind eyes when illegals attempt to cross the Channel.
You will be no wiser but at least you will be better informed.
Bruce, I understand (thought I'm not sure why) that you hold anti-British thoughts, but consider this. Since the end of the 16th Century, the British have been a far more capable nation militarily than Spain.
The Spanish Armada and the so-called 'English Armada' were but two events in centuries of disagreements between the two countries. At the end of the day, we won!

You're such a sensitive little soul. I have no anti British thoughts any more than I have anti Belgium thoughts. You, as usual, wander off into irrelevancy with your jingoistic posts. Let's remember what I actually wrote prior to your total ignorance of history intervening:

Get it now?
For years to come, at every mishap in UK's social, public and economic life, someone will ask the question: shouldn't they have seen this coming at brexit?
You will be no wiser but at least you will be better informed.
Just a couple of points Brucy?
First, you complain of our fixation with brexit, yet you post on the
Brexit forum??
Second, you state we will be better informed, but no wiser? Which
is at best a contradiction??
Donkeyman!
