Which plants do you cover over with the straw?
Basically any soil not now cropping. The new garden needs some `bulk`. I know it will all not rot before next spring . Come late winter /early spring I will dress it all with dried blood.

My garden is quite modest but that price could not be refused

Re: Preparing for Winter

I planted the garlic yesterday and found the supplier had sent three bulbs instead of the usual 2 so I am expecting 30 bulbs next July That should keep me going for a while .

I planted some wallflowers in tubs too, they don't seem so popular these days and are increasingly difficult to find in the shops. £3 for 25plants, not bad I would say.

Re: Preparing for Winter

I always have some wallflowers Meg. It's a bit of greenery for over the winter then some nice bright colour in the spring.
I've just nipped the tops out of all mine I grew from seed, there's 134 altogether, but I don't need as many as that so I shall be giving some away to friends.
I pulled up all my Petunias today, hoed and raked the bed and sprinkled some Growmore about ready to put the wallflowers in. They say this lovely weather we've been having will be on the way out by Sunday night, so not sure whether to plant them quickly before the weather breaks, or wait till we have some rain and then do it. The soil is so dry.

Re: Preparing for Winter

Yesterday started taking down all the runner bean canes, and did lots of weeding. Replaced the whel on the wheelbarrow.
Picked the last on the cherry tomatoes off the plants, and thinned out the beetroot.
Cut back some overhanging branches on the hazelnut tree's,and lifted loads of strawberry runners.
Today will do the Winter clean out of the potting shed, and sort out the raspberry bushes, and lift some potatoes and parsnips for Sunday lunch.
