However, while ever the government continues to be filled by corrupt individuals taking back-handers from powerful conglomerates, nothing is likely to change. Alcohol sells, and profits fuel greed and power. There is little moral standing in the government and powers that be.

There will eventually be another bloody revolution and military and police have been gearing up for it for a long time imo. Everything runs in cycles.
Ahem ... if we're dragging in corrupt backhanders from powerful conglomerates .... that's the reason you're still happily driving around in your car ... I think there might be some remote, tenuous connection to some wealthy Middle Eastern oil well owners inconveniently stuck bang in the middle of battlefields.

Re: Bullying Smokers

Ok , a question for the smokers .

WHY DO WE SMOKE

I'm a smoker , about 5 a day , I enjoy it , the reason I smoke is , it's a comfort and a companion to me when I'm alone . It's OK if I'm told I'm stupid and what a reason etc , but I do ask myself , why do I smoke , and the answer is the same .

When I've been in a live in relationship with a non smoker I don't smoke , strange isn't it

What's your reasons for smoking

@Susan
I enjoy a ciggie
My life is here in this flat - I don't drink alcohol or overeat, I don't inflict my ciggie on anyone else, so I feel I am entitled to have this weakness - non smokers will have theirs

Re: Bullying Smokers

I have never smoked but hate this demonising of the smoker by those with disdainful attitudes. No doubt all of us have habits we would like to kick, and for those who say they don't, I would suggest they start working on their superiority complexes.

I suffer from asthma so of course smoke would affect me - but so too do most body/deodorant sprays. I go to an exercise class where someone (don't know if it is male/female) always sprays him/herself with some sort of deodorant in the room where the class takes place just before we start and it always starts me wheezing and I have to use my inhaler. I am sure if I complained, I would be seen as unreasonable. This used to happen in classrooms too when I was a teacher - I got sick of the chemical smell of Lynx deodorant. What gives people the right to spray chemicals in the air right next to you? However, I don't see that being banned anytime soon.

I can understand the ban on smoking areas outside schools (well primary ones - most of the secondary kids seem to spark up on the way home) and in the play areas of parks, but outside pubs? If that happens, then even more pubs in my area will close. Is there nowhere smokers can go out to socialise? Can't there be smoking and non-smoking pubs for example?

Re: Bullying Smokers

If all the smokers gave up where would the tax that is levied on a packet of cigarettes come from. and I am being serious here.
