Re: Local elections 2nd May - What's the plan?

Bit of a pity there's not a "None of the Above" choice.

There is!

Assuming we have the usual three choices, I shall draw a line through all three boxes and write a short explanatory note.

My vote will then go in with the "spoilt papers" category, though this in itself will send a message if the numbers are published. People will read into that what most people now think.

Exactly.
And the numbers of those are counted, I believe.

I would, however, prefer a proper abstention box.

The Tories, especially, won't take any notice of spoiled votes. Only another party getting votes that may have been theirs will make them think.
I don't really think they'd be bothered if they lose anyway, they wouldn't have to clear up the mess they made and deal with the consequences.

Oh, I think they would.

If they lost many votes, be it to another party or spoilt papers, they'd certainly take notice.

Spoiling a ballet slip is not quite the same as "none of the above" would be.

The only issue might be what would happen if none of the above was the majority.

That would send a HUGE message, right across the bows!

What would happen, though, would be that the candidate getting the most votes would get in, regardless of a greater number of 'abstentions', but the message it sends is powerful.

I read somewhere that a large number of deliberately spoiled votes does worry the establishment.

I confess that I have never once received one of those, but then I don't attend ballet dances.
