And the numbers of those are counted, I believe.
I would, however, prefer a proper abstention box.

The Tories, especially, won't take any notice of spoiled votes. Only another party getting votes that may have been theirs will make them think.I don't really think they'd be bothered if they lose anyway, they wouldn't have to clear up the mess they made and deal with the consequences.

If they lost many votes, be it to another party or spoilt papers, they'd certainly take notice.

The only issue might be what would happen if none of the above was the majority.

What would happen, though, would be that the candidate getting the most votes would get in, regardless of a greater number of 'abstentions', but the message it sends is powerful.
I read somewhere that a large number of deliberately spoiled votes does worry the establishment.
