Despite the downsides (which, like Thalidomide, were only discovered after women had been taking the pill for some years), the pill did bring positive change for many women (and men). From 1966, I was in a stable relationship with my girlfriend (we married in 1967) and, like many young couples at the time, had a sexual relationship using condoms. I can still remember the anxious days at the end of each month waiting (in the words of the poet e.e.cummings) for the "poppy seller to appear in her streets." Although our generation were pretty liberal about pre-marital sex, our parents were not and the thought of an unwanted pregnancy was a nightmare at the time.Re: The Pill.
