Absolutely there are .
Horses for all their size are quite delicate animals with fine legs .
This is especially the case with thoroughbreds .
The impact force of hitting the ground from a big jump or every just running is enough to shatter a leg bone.
Added to this national hunt horses are carrying fairly heavy weights can be as much as 12st. .
Horses in flat races carry less but they are raced far too young for no other reason than money and the bones break.
The horse is then said to have ' broken down '
This is a very frequent occurrence in racing and in training .
A broken down race horse has little future.
They are not educated and often but not always their injuries stop them from being any use in any other Equestrian discipline .

Re: Horse ran to death

Hi

Holly never had a race horse, she used to do simple horse riding and trekking.

A little bit of dressage and jumping.

Just lovely to see them together, her horse used to gallop across to see her when I took her to the stables.

This is what ive just copied from a report in a newspaper ..

Many Clouds had previously suffered with post-race ataxia, a condition that causes horses to overheat after a race. But Aspell said: "He was quite stressed when he was overheating and having a wobble in the past, but this time his ears were pricked, he was walking round bright-eyed and then suddenly it just changed.

"It happened incredibly quickly."

I would have thought that was enough to take him out of racing in the first instance ....

Re: Horse ran to death

I personally would have retired Many Clouds after his National win, but then I didn't own him. He did receive a wind operation due to the condition he suffered, and this is an operation that a fair few race horses undergo in order to allow air to get more easily into their lungs.

Many Clouds would have had to have been fit and passed by equine experts to have been allowed to continue racing. This is a fact, but in no way am I trying to defend the decision to race him on.
