Re: Nature

I think that spiders are fascinating creatures - masters of engineering.
This one is about 3 cms. top to bottom.

I hate the spider web when it splats in your face - they always manage to build it at the right height

Re: Nature

Never seen these before, about 1/5th the size of a normal honey bee...

Re: Nature

What a beautiful pix of a Hoverfly

A Common Hover Fly (Melangyna viridiceps)

They resemble bees but are not as heavily built and they do not sting. They can be distinguished from bees quite easily since hoverflies have only one pair of wings while bees have two pairs of wings.

Adults feed on nectar, pollen and honeydew but in their Larvae stage they are beneficial in controlling many pest insects and are important in the control of outbreaks such as aphids and scale insects.

Re: Nature

A week ago I left my flat about 8.35am (must have been before anyone else in the block), opened the main door and skidded to a halt! There, across the brickwork and obstructing the doorway was a massive web, with the spider about head height. I had to find something in the hallway to dismantle it, so I could get out!

Fortunately we always have junk mail hanging about so I picked up something and waved it about till the web and its resident were gone. People looking over must have thought I were a little mad!

Hope it doesn't happen again. We normally have people going out anytime from 7.30am, and I reckon I was the first that day.

Should have taken a photo!
