Re: You Don"t own me
You Don't Own Me" is a popular song written by the Philadelphia songwriters John Madara and David White, and recorded by Lesley Gore in 1963, when Gore was 17 years old. The song reached number 2 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart in the United States (just behind The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand"). It was produced by Quincy Jones.
Dusty Springfield covered the song on her debut album, A Girl Called Dusty, in 1964.
A 2015 cover by Australian recording artist Grace (Grace Sewell), produced by Quincy Jones (again) was a huge success in New Zealand. The song grew to prominence in the UK when it was used in the 2015 House of Fraser Christmas advert. It was also performed by 2015 X Factor contestant Lauren Murray on 28 November 2015. The increased UK exposure for the song helped it rise to a peak of number four on the UK Singles Chart.
So the Grace version is probably the one you're hearing, although other versions were released by (amongst others) the Tremeloes, Rasputina, Elaine Paige, Joan Jett and the Blow Monkeys along with a slew of foreign language versions .....
The Lesley Gore version is my favourite, though .....
