If their phone is anything like my old phone, which suddenly only displayed half numbers, I can understand why they did it! I had names stored but couldn't make out the numbers so I couldn't put them on my new phone.

I often ring my family but as they're numbers are stored on the phones, I no longer remember them so I'd have to ask if I was using the phone but why she didn't check her phone for the number I don't know!

Yes its perfectly feasible - with many 'phones now having 'speed dial' facilities and caller display - all that is shown is the person's name and this obviously would be a 1st name. I have a number of friends entered into my 'speed dial' 'phone, but if I was out in the street and asked to record their 'phone number I couldn't do it. I have my own mobile 'phone (for emergencies) and if asked what that number is wouldn't have a clue (I have it written down on the 'pay as you go' card in my wallet of 'plastic.
