A question for our Aussie members

A question for Bruce and Ploppy please - and any other Oz members.

Some of our big supermarkets are having trouble keeping their air-con working in this present heatwave.
I was in Waitrose yesterday and theirs had packed up and so had half their fridges.
I was told it always happens once the temperature starts going up past 25 degs.
Then I heard the same was happening in another big supermarket too.

It made me wonder why, and how do your shops cope with your high temperatures every year. Do your shops conk out too? And if not, how come ours do?

Thank you.

We don't seem to have that problem in Aberdeen.

But do you get the same high temperatures up there, Scot?
I thought Scotland escaped the worst, or am I wrong?

That's why I asked the Ozzie members, because the heat they get is much worse than ours, and I wondered if their air-con conks out when its so hot.

I don't know but I suspect that these devices are built for the local conditions ie more cooling area. It could also be that the maintenance of such devices (fridges and A/C) is a licensed trade here so there are plenty of specialists that know what they are doing. It's a four year apprenticeship here, I am not sure of the situation in the UK.

Thanks Bruce. Strange I heard of 2 well-known supermarkets on the same day with the same problem, although I understand Waitrose was the worse affected.
It just seemed daft when a lad who worked there said it always happens when the heat gets bad. I would have thought that was we needed the air-con most!

I've never known any big stores here to have air con problems. It's too important with- as you say, the heat. It's simply a matter of priority and health safety. But air con is important for more than just cooling. Any big enclosed place where lots of people congregate should be air conditioned regardless of the climate. It's a public health issue.

Thanks for your comments Keezoy.
We sometimes don't seem to cope as well here.

I don't know what type of equipment is used in England.
There are differences. I do know that most shopping centres in Australia use watercooled condensers. That may be the above mentioned difference.
I usually find the temperature in shopping centres to bloody cold, even on a 40 degree day.
