Re: Suffragette
My Gran was a suffragette - all 4'9" of her!!! She used to tell me some of the stories, but I think she missed out some of the more lurid details of her actions and the consequences thereof.
She was also a 'match girl' and George used to have a press cutting and photograph of my gran as a 10 yr old on the 'picket lines' of the factory. The press photo was of her laying about this policeman with her rolled umbrella.
So you can all see, I come from a long line of rebels!!!
During WW1, she was conscripted into Woolwich arsenal making ammunition for the navy. Have no idea how she smuggled it out, but she brought home this shell (here's one I made earlier???). Used the brass casing (filled with sand) as her ash tray. The shell itself stood the othewr side of the 'hearth' and as a kid I used to play with it. When she died and we had to clear her flat, we discovered this shell was still 'live' - a 6" naval shell. Had it exploded it would have taken out the entire terrace block where Gran lived.
