Digital Driving Licence

Digital Driving Licences are being trialled in NSW - can't wait to get mine, one less card to carry about.

BTW you're invited to join the trial.

You're not allowed to drive - solves two problems at a stroke - bulging wallets and overcrowded roads.

Re: Digital Driving Licence

Pretty useless if the network folds or falls over like O2 did the other week. That's why I don't agree with the internet of things. At least with a card you don't have to rely on electricity or a wireless signal.

I think a lot of money is being wasted on such projects. They may be temporary or they will require constant maintenance and upgrades versus what is a far cheaper programme. On top of this you end up with the double running costs of running two separate programmes while introducing it. Systems people and investors make money out of it. A war would destroy it with one bomb in the right place. Too many risks IMO for something so important. Where is the data kept - the "cloud" which we are meant to trust as secure from hackers and saboteurs?

Won't affect it, just like having a photo on your phone.

Yep this . .

Plus it will also make it easy for people to hack into the database and steal people's identities.

There will come a time when the internet and databases and everything else will go down, perhaps the result of a terrorist EMP device detonation. When it happens those who didn't maintain hard copies of everything will have a hard time proving who they were and what things/accounts they had. Bank accounts, savings accounts, pensions, whether they are licensed to drive a car, insurance policies, utility bills/payments, etc etc

The primary governmental databases and computers will of course be protected from EMPs but most other things, not a chance.

Data centres across the country are just buildings full of computer kit with uninterruptable power supplies and strong fire protection and so on. Detonate an EMP bomb and I suspect many of those will be wiped out. Pretty much all corporate and nationwide businesses have long since outsourced their IT aspects to service providers who in turn have everything hosted from these data centres.

In September, state news agencies from North Korea explicitly stated that the country could hit the United States with an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attack. Since the announcement, people have been struggling to understand the possibilities of an EMP attack and its level of risk.
