Personally I don't know what the fuss is about if you have the standard non smart meter then you are paying a bill which covers the peak and off peak tariffs. If you have a smart meter then you will be able to minimise your bill (if you want to) by ensuring that you use most power at the minimum cost periods - Like turning on your dishwasher, clothes dryer, washing machine etc when you go to bed. With an effective market regulator you should be better off and there is evidence that this is the case.The biggest danger with smart meters is that the provider will start charging for 'apparent' power rather than actual power which would increase your bill considerably - their argument will probably be something along the lines of "We have to provide wires to carry the higher current"
The difference between real and apparent power is that in AC main power the current and voltage are not always in phase because of inductive or capacitive load and this phase difference has to be used to calculate the real power consumed.
Apparent power is basically just Power = Amps x Volts (as in DC)
