Volcano erupts

Just receiving 1st bit of news about the eruption of Popocatepetl Volcano aprox 100 Km S.W. of Mexico City. It appears, based on recent photos that there is a town quite close to the base of the mountain. NO info on casualties at this moment. Pyroclastic flows, as you are no doubt aware can devastate vast areas of human populations and forests. As of now, the ash cloud is reaching altitudes of 2 Km.

Based upon historical studies, each past eruption has lasted aprox. 2 yrs.

The power and majesty of mother Earth is at once frightening and awe inspiring.

Nature is truly amazing, Bakerman, I had not realised that Popocatepetl was still a 'live' volcano - in which case why on earth would anyone build a town so close to it?

The Mexican volcano Mt Popocatepetl is relatively new, some of the people (or their descendants) were there before the volcano began its first eruption.

Sorry, Joe. Volcanologists estimate Popocatepetl is 730,000 years old. Which means it was erupting long before anything identifiable as human existed.

Re: Volcano erupts

There are many types of volcanos. One of the more famous, Mona Loa in Hawaii is not one of the explosive types; she "merely" releases red hot magma, which seldom stops until it reaches the sea. An explosive type, due to the sulfurous gasses which built up, is Mount St Helens, in SW Washington State, which last erupted in 1980, and which I had the good fortune to watch from my balcony.

The Mother of all volcanos is located in Yellowstone National Park in the state of Wyoming. That monster has a crater 40 miles wide. When it blew, long before people entered North America, it laid down ash 1.2 foot deep, a thousand miles away. If it blew today with the same force, it would lay waste much of North America. The last 3 super eruptions occurred 2.1 million years ago, 1.3 m.y.a. and the last one 630 K yrs ago.
She is showing signs of waking again but the odds of it happening in our life-time are extremely remote. Still, Lake Yellowstone is actually tipping up on the north side. Today we can see many acres of dead forest on the south side of the lake which were alive and well when I was a young man.

Re: Volcano erupts

Close to 8000 tourists have been left temporarily stranded at Bali’s international airport at the weekend after the island’s Mt Agung volcano erupted Saturday evening and again Sunday morning, forcing international airlines to cancel or detour flights.

The volcanic eruptions which began 5.30pm local time on Saturday (8.30pm AEDT) sent plumes of ash and steam more than 3000 meters into the atmosphere and down onto villages within the 7.5 km evacuation zone enforced by authorities this week after a smaller eruption on Tuesday.

The ash cloud prompted aviation authorities to issue a red alert notice for Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport yesterday morning, and to close Lombok’s Bandana International Airport after south easterly winds pushed the ash cloud towards the neighbouring island.

This morning they are reporting that lava has reached the crater of the volcano.

Re: Volcano erupts

For those people interested in learning about what a serious monster volcano is capable of, look at what the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa did. The blast was heard over 3,000 mile away, ruptured the ear-drums of sailors 40 miles away and put so much sulfur-dioxide into the atmosphere that 1884 was known as the year without a summer. It actually snowed in many parts of America on the 4th of July.
