Re: A new tier 4

It also seems pretty obvious that these selfish imbeciles have no idea of how things get spread, and how their behaviour affects growth. Perhaps some kind of demo which shows how the R rate actually relates to where we are now, how we have got here, and how they have contributed towards it??

Would be easy enough for a software program/app could be created so they can play with the parameters and how "the curve" will change every time a person gets infected; which also predicts a death count and how quickly it might actually harm or kill someone they care about.

Re: A new tier 4

For anyone that's interested (and having read this thread and not booked themselves a space in my tent for a bit of a reprieve!), a very simplistic model of the R number can be seen by downloading the app desmos on your phone and drawing the graph of y=1.1^x (the^ means use the ab button). Then change 1.1 to 0.9 and see the difference between an exponential growth and decay. The values 1.1 and 0.9 will give an idea of how the R values affect matters. Changing to 1 will also indicate a status quo.

It's obviously not as simple as that, but it does paint a simple picture.

I doubt these people believe in statistics and modelling presented. But they should understand and believe an emotional family member accusing them of contributing to the avoidable death of a loved one in public. Or a group of medics telling them what they are going through and showing videos of the inside of the body and what covid does to lungs and organs

Agreed. Just think that they might still not understand the concept of the connectedness and how everything affects everything. (Chaos and Butterfly Effect springs to mind)

That has happened a lot in my local shopping high street over Christmas and the new year. They sit on a number of the benches, beer in one hand, drug joint in the other, laughing and swearing, sometimes coughing and spitting at people as they walk by. The police get called, they ask the people to behave and stop what they are doing (coughing and spitting), they tell the police to f off, it's a free country and they can do what they like. They then get abusive and physical and the police are forced to arrest them.

A clockwork orange springs to mind. Aversion therapy. Of course that's unethical but so is standing outside a hospital mingling while medics have to run a gauntlet. There was an ITU nurse on tv today saying how demoralised the images of those people outside st thomas's made her feel.

Thanks. Have never read Clockwork Orange, so have downloaded it as something to do over the next couple of days.

Re: A new tier 4

I wonder how one isolates in a family, if a member of that family has it?

My son has had to go into isolation, one of his colleagues has it and has been hospitalised...will it ever end?

Seems to be 2 schools of thought:

1. Infected member stays alone in a room and is catered for.

2. Carry on as normal on the assumption that it's been in the house for a while anyway and people will be infected.

In either case, the guidelines state that the whole household should remain in isolation and rely on deliveries and family/friends to leave supplies at the doorstep. The gov website and a phone message/app will provide guidance about this and how long for.

Have had friends and indeed ourselves operate both methods. Luckily nobody has had to be hospitalised nor died yet, and no long term harm seems to have happened.
