Re: Tread easy US

Who knows how much the convoys during WW2 helped?. A now very elderly person I know flew in the Battle of Britain, and later flew as escort(Hurricats?) on the Murmansk run. To him politics was secondary to getting the job done.

Quite so Meg, Obama has played the wimp cards and now Putin is cashing in to restore Russia pride and retaliate against boycotts.
Just the same reason Germany started WW2.

Re: Tread easy US

There's a lot of mutual poking in the eye going on over Putin's involvement in Syria. Politicians have never looked so asinine.

Two things confuse me ..
Putins says he's bombing ISIS.
Obama & Allies accuse him of bombing moderate rebels.

But .. someone correct me if I'm wrong. Some of these moderate rebels around Idlib , (whom the US are supporting & Russia are bombing) ... are actually a collation of militias called the Army of Conquest ... affiliated to Al-Qaeda. If these are moderate rebels (preferred over Assad and ISIS) I wouldn't want to tangle with hardliners.

And ...
Is there any truth in the speculation/rumours that China is going to join the Russia/Syria/Iraq/Iran coalition?
Haven't there have been reports of 2 Chinese warships going through Suez in the last week or so?

It has the potential to get very nasty.
And I think Syria is already gone .. and it's fame will be as a historic battleground.
Even if Assad were not there its Fate will to be carved up between warring militias.
Look at the peace and democracy that was left in Iraq and Libya after the West meddled in regime change.

All this to rid the world of ISIS and it's Caliphate.

Re: Tread easy US

During our holiday in Limassol, Cyprus twice I saw a Russian cruiser entering or leaving the port.

Once we saw Russian sailors onshore - very popular in Cyprus too I might add - and we also saw a submarine, probably nuclear, in Akrotiri Bay on the surface very near a merchant ship then close a large fishing-type vessel, all of which headed off towards the Syrian coast over a 12 hour period.

Russia has had it's forces there for some time so I think that it is highly probable that they are there to bolster the regime and so will more than likely be tasked with "dealing" with that regimes enemies.

Western eyes may regard some as legitimate opposition but Putin's Russia does not follow Western assumption - and never will. stevmk2
