Re: Carl Sagan

His Cosmos series was excellent. I have the book based on the series, that's very good and informative too.

It was the first time I'd ever heard the word aluminum. In the UK we call it aluminium.

What hooked me to watching it was his explanation of how Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth.

Also, it was the first science based series which I'd seen which connected science to the art and awe of the universe.

Brian Cox is a modern day equivalent, although he does seem a bit too interested in us watching him gaze up at the firmament

Same here. With basic tools and an enquiring mind - who would have thought that the bottom of a well to the south of Alexandria could be seen at midday and columns cast no shadows and cause Eratosthenes to do an experiment to see if the same applied at midday in Alexandria. It didn't, so he deduced that the Earth was curved and set out to prove it.

Cox has fallen for his own image and publicity, which he thinks gives him the right to condemn those that voted Leave, and tell others how they should vote in general elections. Another champagne socialist.
