Revenge is a dish best served cold ... here it comes straight from the freezer !
I always buy local wherever possible if the quality of the product is good.
However when it comes to some products, we either don’t manufacture them or their reliability is poor i will no lobger buy them
I had three new range rovers between 2007 and 2016 and each one had issues, mainly software derived. I’ve given up on them and now have a US made Ford Edge 4wd and a Japanese made Toyota 4wd hybrid. Both are excellent and reliable

Most of the guys I work with drive BMW, Audi or Mercedes and a 10% tariff is unlikely to change their preferences

Unless we start growing them on mass, people will still buy Dutch flowers although delays at points of entry may impact on their shelf life

There will be winners and losers but at the moment it seems the EU are more prepared than the UK

Unfortunately it has come back to bite them on the bum and is the very reason we have bj as pm!

In addition, this is from march, just before you were supposed to exit. By that date three quarters of dutch businesses were prepared. By october that will be 100%. I hope the UK will be too by then, because, out you go.

In mid-March, 32% of entrepreneurs said they were actively (largely or properly) preparing. In the summer of 2018 that was still 18% and in 2017 only 9% of the entrepreneurs were busy preparing for Brexit. In addition, 44% say they prepare a bit. In total, therefore, three-quarters of the companies are more or less involved with Brexit. The number of entrepreneurs who do not engage in any preparations at all has fallen sharply from 46 to 20%.

Until the withdrawal bill was voted down and May quit

It's a lot diifferent now youre facing the prospect of being collateral damage of a no deal Brexit because your EU masters have left you to take it on the chin while they sit watching from their comfy offices.

Ofcourse their jobs are safe for another 5 years at least unlike your dutch fishermen, port workers and flower growers.

I said the EU is more prepared than the UK, that doesn’t mean that they are totally prepared but they have been preparing for some time.

There appears to be complacency in the UK

We do buy flowers from other countries such as Kenya but due to the distance they are transported by air so tend to be the more expensive varieties. So which other countries were you thinking of that are close enough to keep transport costs down?

The BBC again ....

My mate owns a garden centre in Wales near Caernarfon. He is more Brexit than I am and he has been buying flowers in from everywhere (including) Holland for years before we had the referendum. He says Brexit wont affect him one bit - he has already sorted his suppliers out and his done since ages.

We also grow a lot of them here ... shock !

Besides a lot of flowers we import are the exotic varieties so they are expensive anyway - transport costs on top of orchids don't deter young Romeo's when they might get their leg over.

Sometimes they throw in a box of chocolates as well - usually Swiss chocolates so they should save a bit on the Belgian stuff.

I don't think a wealthy socialist with a nice house, various out buildings and a walk in pantry would worry too much about an extra £2 on a bunch of freesias

Besides we control what comes into our country!

31% of EU import of cut flowers (mainly roses) come from kenya. But they go to amsterdam,(where tarifs are payed) and exported to the UK. Without a tarif of course.
The UK is the country where 15% of "dutch" flowers are exported to. Another 15% to france and 30% of our exported flowers go to germany (92% of flowers sold in germany come from the netherlands).

Post brexit you can import your own roses from kenya, but since you are a minor buyer, you pay a higher price. The netherlands import € 0.8 bn worth in flowers, and export flowers € 3.8 bn worth.
If you're going to import your own roses from kenya, we deduct that amount from our imports and exports, so on balance, there is no change.
