You would leave a puppy alone for four hours??

I disagree, that is not always the case Besoeker, sometimes people's circumstances change through no fault of their own, then a much loved pet is reluctantly handed in to rescue for personal reasons.

Likewise, some poor dogs are also handed in when the owner dies and nobody in the family is willing to take over the responsibility.

Not all dogs are in rescue because they were unloved and/or badly treated.

Nicol , Mack's is a handsome chappie.

I agree. But that doesn't invalidate my point.

What a beautiful dog, Nicol.

Re: Designer Dogs

I love dogs. Obviously could not have one while I was working - it would have been cruel as, apart from toileting needs, dogs are social creatures so to leave one on it's own for so long would have been irresponsible. I had thought that when I retired I might have one - certainly not a designer one - but perhaps a rescue dog - but I found that I was still out a lot - and mostly places where dogs would not be welcome. Shopping - most shops are not dog friendly. Visiting friends - no way would I take a dog into someone else's house unless I had permission beforehand. Going out for the day - not having a car I rely on buses/trains - not all dogs are happy to travel and I would not leave one all day. I enjoy spending time with my Westie friend and her owner knows I would gladly give her a home if the need ever arose - but I would have to change my lifestyle to accommodate her. Dogs are more needy of human intervention than cats are.

It is a huge responsibility to take a dog, or any other animal, into your home - it is also a life changing commitment. You can no longer just take off on an impulse and come back when you feel like it. Having pets is more restrictive than having children - but they are worth it!

This is true Tabs, I agree.
That's why I get lost if I go more than about 5 miles from home, because I never go far because of the dogs and have got out the habit of navigating anywhere.

If I had only one dog I would probably take it everywhere with me, but it's much more difficult with multiple animals.

Re: Designer Dogs

Whilst Im against irresponsible breeding Im not against cross breeding

Without cross breeding we wouldn't have half the dogs we have now and accept as breeds

Ive only ever had Cocker Spaniels and have paid an arm and leg to ensure I have had dogs which were well bred , from good lines

I expect not to pay more then £100 for a dog being sold by someone who's pet was mated with the dog up the road cos they always got along, no matter what kind of designer name they gave it

Right now Ive been without a dog for two years and the hankering is their, However, no matter what (if) we go for, if we don't find a rescue, I will be researching the breeding and won't be paying silly money for a so called designer breed

Re: Designer Dogs

When I was growing up, people were giving cross bred dogs away free to good homes. Why are people now paying a small fortune for one? What Happened?
