In our case it was yards & yards of thick plastic sheeting, enough to cover a house. Why they buried it there, then put top soil on top I'll never know. No wonder the rain never drained away. Took us ages to dig it up & remove it all.
Annoying isn't it. I wish people would do things properly. I have this theory that the previous owners bought a few tons of topsoil and just covered everything up where it lay.

It was the builders of the house that did it, it was brand new when we moved in.
