What makes you think that?

I agree with JBR that it was Tony Blair that wanted more school leavers to go to Uni.

It was a policy that sounds good in theory but has had a terrible effect on our young people who are wholly unprepared mentall yand financially for University and who are pretty much coerced into going.

Great for the academic fat cats creaming off super sized salaries whilst proving piss poor degrees to kids who are then burdened with a low quality education, big debts and have been brainwashed by Academia's PC agenda into a generation of frightened Sheeple .

A University education for the hoi polloi was the pay off for mass immigration of low skilled foreign workers .

It was Thatcherite policy that led to the expansion of university places. By moving them from state funded institutions to income generating establishments touting for business. They had to expand their student intake to make it financially viable. It also encouraged a huge increase in foreign students. All this has of course led to watered down qualifications because to expand you have to offer a myriad of choice. Oxford apparently were so disgusted with her policies they refused to give her an honorary degree. It was her idea to introduce fees and loans.

Labour merely carried on the same policy. The same with PFIs - a tory invention.

No. Large scale university expansion dates back to the late 1960s.

The difference was, of course, that standards were maintained and there was no wholesale re-identifying of technical colleges as 'new universities'.
