The Coalition is in Minority Government

With just over 20% of the vote counted in the by election for the Ex PMs seat the percentages of votes counted so far are:

Sharma (Liberal) 35%
Phelps (Independent) 33%
Murray (Labor) 12%
Kanak (Greens) 10%

With the preferences flowing to Phelps from Labor and the Greens the Independent will win easily.

The seat of Wentworth has been a Liberal seat since federation so the decline of 24% in the Liberal vote is a disaster for the Liberal Government. It is one of the richest electorates in Australia with hundreds of multimillion dollar Mansions on Sydney Harbour.

The Government will now have to negotiate with the cross bench in both houses to get their legislation through.

Basically the right wing of the Liberal Party has been put on notice that no one wants their ideology.

Don't you wish you had preferential voting where every vote counts no matter who you vote for?

Re: The Coalition is in Minority Government

Here are the first preference votes of all the candidates in the election so far. only four candidates really matter, the rest will probably lose their deposit.

As you can see the Liberal candidate failed to get the 50% plus 1 vote so the vote went to preferences. At least 80% of the second preferences of the Labor and Greens candidates went to Phelps so she was able to declare victory before the count was finished.

It is unlikely that the government will be defeated on a no confidence motion in Parliament and bills still only need 75 votes to pass. The coalition only needs 2 cross benchers to support a bill for it to pass.

Re: The Coalition is in Minority Government

The voting has tightened but it still looks like Phelps will get in but with only about 51% (two party preferred) after preferences are distributed but it will be tight.

What has changed? Counting the pre-poll and postal votes have made the difference.

As an independent Phelps had very limited resources but she is an experienced campaigner (ex Sydney City Councillor) and her campaign peaked at the election. A lot of the postal and pre-poll votes were cast before she got into her swing and before the PM ScoMo made a gallah of himself with spur of the moment promises when the Liberals realised that the wheels were falling off.
