Blood donation

When Elsie had her operation she had to have some blood. I just wanted to say thank you to anyone who has ever allowed their dog to donate blood, I've never had a big enough dog to do it so it's been a one way street taking not giving for us, but this is third time in my life time we have been helped by the big dogs like this.

It's a real life saver when they need it.

Re: Blood donation

I never realised that Vet's/Animals had a blood bank - should have done i suppose - it is obvious really. I learn something every day.

Thank you Julie. I hope Elsie is recovering well.

Re: Blood donation

I believe there only very few central blood banks for animals, unless I am wrong. Most vets wouldn't need it to hand like that.
Perhaps Mr. FitzP has to keep a supply because of the intricate specialist surgery that is performed at his premises.

There are some quite interesting questions/answers here if anyone wanted to have a read.

Re: Blood donation

They have a number of dogs on stand by at this practice. I believe a new found land came in for Elsie. It's not like human donation any large dog can donate to any other dog.

Re: Blood donation

I remember watching the tv programme about the Australian vet who practices here. (Forget name of the show.). He called a friend with a big dog to get a donation.

Nice of you to thank dog owners, Julie. Hope Elsie is doing well.

Someone has asked that very question on the link I posted Julie.
Although this is true what you said, it can only be done the once, because apparently there are differences in canine blood but it is very complicated.

Fascinating isn't it, as I said we've never had a big enough dog to do it but very thankful others do.
