Excessive Red Berries

Does this really mean we are going to get a harsh winter or is it just another old wives (husbands) tale?

Re: Excessive Red Berries

Many of these tales have a base in reality, worst year I remember here we had biggest acorns and loads of berries on the sumac and rowan trees in the communal gardens. The squirrels were burying them all over the lawns and they are doing that at the moment but the acorns are quite small and the trees aren't so covered either.

Old wives tale, its the prevailing conditions at the time,of pollination and the summer growing conditions with some late summer /Autumn sun to aid ripening.

I am off foraging - the hips and haws round here are plentiful and huge this year. Definitely going to harvest some.

Re: Excessive Red Berries

My rather overgrown garden is full of wild blackberries & they are very sweet & juicy.

Re: Excessive Red Berries

Make sure you harvest them all before Michaelmas Day!

The rule against eating blackberries after September 29 comes not from seasonality but from the story of the Archangel Michael, for whom the day is named. Michael, the greatest of all angels, defeated the angel Lucifer in a huge battle and banished him from heaven, the lore goes. At that point Lucifer became the devil. When Lucifer bounced onto the floor of hell, he landed in a thorny blackberry bush. (Naturally when you land in hell, you land end-first in a bunch of thorns.) This made him so mad that he spit, urinated and defaecated on the bush and cursed its fruit.

Re: Excessive Red Berries

The times I've argued this in the pub with the old timers... The trees don't know coming weather any more than the weathermen.
A glut of berries means they have had a good growth year weatherwise ....period.
