Eyesight

At work yesterday I went to put my glasses on and was horrified to hear and see one of the arms snap off.

I wear both distance and close work glasses separately as I can't get on with varifocals.

I can't see to work on my computer or read anything without them and I thought I was going to have to go home from work until a colleague taped them up to hold it in place. It worked for the rest of my shift but then came apart again

While I knew my eyesight is bad I didn't realise as to how my life tevolved around my glasses and it t was a real shock when all of a sudden I didn't have them.

I didn't have a spare pair but luckily I found some off the peg ones to tide me over, they at least will help me see my computer today. My new glasses won't be ready until next week so it's a good job I found these or I wouldn't have been able to go to work!

New glasses are an expense I could do without right now!

I.m really shocked at how bad my eyesight has gotten and so quickly too, it's quite worrying.

How is your eyesight? Mine started to deteriorate in my mid 40s.

Do any of you have your eyes Lasered? Would you recommend it? It's not something I could afford right now but I wouldn't mind having it done in the future if things get better fundwise.

Re: Eyesight

I asked the eye surgeon about Laser for the eyes and he said avoid at all costs. That was when I had my eye operated on. He is one of the top eye surgeons in the country, even lectures on the subject.

I have to have a hospital eye checkup every 6 months because of glaucoma which is inherited I understand.

Eyes are very delicate organs and messing about with them with a company out to make money and that their only real interest is not a wise move. You optician will say the same no doubt but get him to make an appointment with your Dr first and then arrange to see an eye specialist at a hospital.

OH when did you last have your eyes checked by your optician? you don't say, but worth doing every couple of years

Re: Eyesight

I’m with realspeed on this one. I’ know some people who have had laser surgery who have had their eyes ruined by it so I personally wouldn’t do it, plus it has to be done often. It’s not a one time deal.

My eyes are bad. I wear glasses most times and except for reading and doing fine detailed things, can get away with not having them but I do get my eyes checked every two years and when I go to renew my prescription always go to places that offer a two for one deal. That way I always have a second pair.

Years ago my dog ate my glasses frames when she was a puppy and I was without glasses for about a month and it was horrible.

Good luck on getting yours fixed.

Re: Eyesight

My eyesight started going about mid 40's too, Lion Queen, but at first I ignored it & muddled on, then around 49 decided I'd have to have an eye test, I was surprised at how bad my eyes had got too, hence needing vari-focals. I have had Vari-focals for years now, It took me a while to get used to them, but once I did it was marvelous. I have two pairs, one I keep in my bag, the other I keep by the PC. I get my eyes tested every 2 years & surprisingly they haven't really changed much in those years, except I do have very slow growing cataracts in both eyes.

You have my sympathies LQ. I have had to wear glasses since my mid teens. Varifocals later in life but, at about 70, my eyesight deteriorated to the point where I couldn't drive. Cataracts were the problem. The first eye has been operated on successfully, I think. The problem I face at the moment is depth of focus with the two eves working so differently. Makes steps something of a challenge.

Later this month I have an assessment and, hopefully a proposed date for the second operation.

I am dreading the time when they say my cataracts need sorting, so far I am lucky & they aren't bad enough to do & as I don't drive to me they aren't a problem, yet.

Re: Eyesight

Lion Queen, I'm in a very similar position. My sight started to fade with seeing long distance and being affected by bright lights in my late 40's so I got an eye test and ended up with glasses for watching TV/going to see bands, driving and a pair of sunglasses. Now my reading is getting little bit blurry too so I may need glasses for this too.

The worst thing is when it's sunny outside and you want to read a book. You need to sunglasses to shade the light but also need the glasses for reading, so I may end up with four different pairs of specs at this rate. How are you supposed to keep changing them all the time every time you do something different? It's annoying.

Hope you get yours sorted out though

Re: Eyesight

Would laser treatment sort out both distance and reading issues at the same time I wonder (i.e. long and short sightedness)?

Thanks Floydy, I;ve just got home from work after using the off the peg glasses and I've got a rotten headache so they obviously aren't doing for me. Roll on when my new glasses are ready.
