A big tree has deposited a lot of carbondioxide. The moment you cut it, and most are cut to burn, the deposited carbon is released again as carbondioxide.
Wood in a landfil will release it's carbon due by being broken down by fungi.
The influence of the rainforest is mainly on water, and local. Influence of trees, forests in our region on earth, is nil.
I agree Solly that most trees in land clearance are burned
and that is part of the problem, the other is that when it rains
now the land gets eroded by the run off and contributes to
loss of topsoil etc, including landslides and collapse of
infrastructure!
However plantations are never burned as the timber cut is
a commercial product, and the trees are relaced almost
immediately
We need a coordinated world wide plan to make any real
difference to the climate!
