In 2008

there were 30,000 independent butchers in the UK, now there are only 6,000, be very careful folks don't let these independent die out, or you will finish up paying the earth for everything from the giants.

I agree Wrinkly - we always try to use our independent butcher, also our greengrocer, these are dying out too, at least where I live.

I always use my butcher - he's the only who can supply my 'safari' meat for me.

Re: In 2008

I am surrounded by independent butchers (7 that I can think of in three miles ) including an organic butcher and the farm shop which I use which rears its own pork in the orchards.

Get out of the towns into our lovely villages and the local butchers are alive and well

Re: In 2008

That's the problem when large chain supermarkets or "Big Box" stores move into a neighborhood. They drive all the small mom and pop businesses out. Small businesses simply cannot compete with prices and variety. Here we have a large chain called Walmart. It is owned by the Walton family. The five Walton siblings combined wealth is more than the bottom 30% of Americans COMBINED!.. YET they pay so poorly that their employees qualify for government assistance. Just how much money does one need? You cannot spend it all.. not in a lifetime.. YET there is a need to make more and more profit, while the employees struggle with poor wages and no healthcare.

Re: In 2008

Lets face it meat from a local butcher can be pretty expensive and when you can shop so very easily from the likes of Tesco's online (like I do) then it is a no brainer. A new butcher started up not so long ago in my village with a cracking looking shop but didn't last long. Price is so very important now, well it sure is with me anyway.
