Famous people

Most of us come from top to bottom, left to right of the UK ....... and several of you from abroad.

It would be interesting to know of any famous people connected with the town where you live now or previously lived.

I have lived in Bristol all my life and the well known names with connections to the city are:

Isambard Kingdom Brunel, not born in Bristol but he built the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

John and Charles Wesley - John was founder of the Methodist Church. His brother, Charles was well known as a prolific hymn-writer including `'Jesu lover of my soul", "love Divine" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol and the family emigrated to the Untied States where she became the first female doctor.

Cary Grant, film star, was born not far from where I used to live.

Samuel Plimsoll was born in Bristol. His campaign led to the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876, instructing the "Plimsoll Line" to be painted on the hull of every ship to mark its load line.

William Gilbert (WG) Grace, the famous cricketer.

John Cabot - Italian explorer who sailed from Bristol to Newfoundland.

Billy Butlin of Butlin's Holiday Camp fame.

Re: Famous people

Hello Mags, Cary Grant was one of my favoutite actors, very funny the faces he could pull to look bewildered.
There are a lot of famous people from Dublin, here are just a few I can think of off hand.
Oliver Goldsmith (Playwright).
George Bernard Shaw (Playwright).
Bram Stoker (Of Dracula fame).
Sean O' Casey (Playwright).
Michael Gambon (Lived on the same Street as kids, I think he's a 'Sir' now.)
Wilfred Brambell (Steptoe)
There are a lot of footballers who played in Britain at the highest level, including Liam Whelan of Manchester United who died in the Munich air disaster, (1958, I think).
