Re: Tomatoes

They emit ethylene gas, which does hasten the ripening process.

Re: Tomatoes

A bit off topic, but apples give off ethylene also. If you have some peaches or tomatoes that aren't quite ripe, put them in a paper bag with an apple. Speeds it up.

Re: Tomatoes

Fabbo tomatoes!! Mine are ripening like crazy, can't keep up with eating them! I also took a load of green ones of a skip at the allotment and put one or two of my ripe ones in a box with them and all but about 2 of the 20-odd are now turning red

Re: Tomatoes

Nero, if you're going to do tomatoes again next year, look into getting some tomato cages for them. Simpler than staking if you don't have a great number of plants, and they hold the ripening trusses very well.

Yola, if you have the time and energy you could make some lovely pasta sauces with all those excess tomatoes! I used to do my own but have gotten lazy and use the bought, although I do doctor them up a bit .....

Re: Tomatoes

Just had a nice thing happen: a friend who's been down country just came by with some lovely fresh tomatoes for me. Perfect timing as mine have the blight!
