An interesting thread, Vinylman. It's not often a question like this is asked.
For me it's got to be David Ruffin because 'My Girl' is my favourite Motown song of all-time. Ruffin oozes soul on this and knocks the socks off Otis Redding's far less sumptuous cover version. Just sheer class.
Written by Smokey Robinson, My Girl was a huge No.1 hit when it was released but didn't even chart in the UK (a lowly No.43). Can you believe it?

To be honest I've always preferred The Drifters and they certainly had a big turn over of members.
