Re: Immigrant Dependency

Hi

Just to add, I am a scientist from a very poor background.

I was the eldest, so no Uni, I had to get a job and go to Polytechnic.

Block release, no holidays.

I was paid during my studying, had to work for them for 3 years after.

I was lucky, I wish we gave others the same chance now.

For the menial work, yes but not just that..........Why on Earth are we importing Doctors, for example?

We know how to train doctors. Why are 90% of UK Doctors from middle/upper class backgrounds?
Where are the Working Class doctors?
Why are 90% of Scientists from upper and middle class backgrounds?
Why aren't we instilling belief and giving real opportunities to kids from poorer homes.

It's a failure of epic proportions.
The requirements for Medical schools in the UK are extremely exacting .
Most require three As at A level and these must include Chemistry and two other academic subjects .
Would be applicants also have to pass a series of tests set by the individual colleges .
Make personal statements as to why they want to be a doctor and be of good character .
The reason that most come from middle class families is that the families themselves were probably studious and clever and that’s how they obtained their middle class status .

People tend to marry people of similar backgrounds .
So two intelligent people will ( on paper ) produce intelligent children .
Who go on to become professional themselves.

I know of two working class medics.

One came from a disadvantaged family he had been adopted .
However he later found his biological father who was in fact a doctor .
This gave him the idea to apply to medical school and he was accepted and himself became a doctor .

The second came from a very poor family indeed .
He won a scholarship to medical college ( this was not in the Uk ) he was exceptionally clever And became a veterinary surgeon .
None of his siblings did anything academic .
