Romanian fruit pickers

I am astounded ( so astounded I don’t know if I have already started a thread on this or not ) that we are allowing Romanian fruit pickers into the country during lockdown .
We have quite literally thousands of university students doing nothing why can’t they go and pick the darn veg they are young and bright it won’t kill them to do a bit of fruit picking and would help the country .

The unemployed should be MADE to do this work if they are physically able or have all benefits suspended. Around here the going rate for this work is 15 quid an hour and very low cost though a bit Spartan accomodation.

I used to go fruit veg picking as a teenager we liked it and liked earning money too.It was nice especially in warm weather
The hardest was potato picking now that really is hard labour .

Re: Romanian fruit pickers

I must admit I was kind of shocked to see this on the news, but if they can't get students & the unemployed to pick the fruit & veg & they can't force them to do it & the Romanians are willing to do it for a cheap wage, then that is what is happening. They have always, since the EU, employed workers from the Balkan countries anyway & I hope they will be health monitored properly.

Plums aren't ready to pick yet. Wait til the Autumn. The way it's going the fruit growers will need them then too.

The Romanians that I have met are very hard workers and working outdoors will be more likely not to have the virus I imagine but it seems daft when we have so many young people not working,
