As far as I am aware, the number of Magi was never mentioned in't old book, just that three in particular got a mention.
Heck, what do I know? I wasn't there.
Your version is just as likely as anyone else's. I didn't twig that there were supposed to be four but one got done in. I thought rather that one of several, (or should that be seven of nine
) never made it, and thus never got a mention in any of the previous versions.
I still think it's a good story though, whatever the intent.
