PC misbehaving!

Not sure if the PC is sick, or it's the cold weather' or it's W10 - or even a combination of all three.

Three times today I have had a blue screen with white writing telling me 'Your device has encountered an error and must be restarted' then it switches off and reboots. It has happened when I have been using the forum, when I have been in the word processor, and when I have been typing emails.

The second thing that has been happening - usually when in a forum or on youtube - is my browser (Firefox) disappears and a white text box pops up saying 'your tab has failed - restore tab?' If I click on restore tab button it comes back to where I was working.

Have checked all the wires - everything that should be is connected.

Have looked inside the tower - all looks clean and as it should be.

Not being very techy minded I do not know what else to do - short of introducing it to a large hammer!

Please, has anyone any ideas?

No mention of what caused the error?

Check for viruses, malware/spyware

Usually when you get that specific blue error screen it means one of two things, a piece of hardware is starting to fail or there is a fault/glitch with a file that windows uses and every time it tries to access the file, it crashes the computer with the blue screen error.

You need a tech person to fix this because such a fault can be very very difficult find and time consuming to fix. If you have anything important on your computer I suggest you back it up now before things gets worse.

I agree .....

Once that's done then the PC should be taken for repair or replacement .....

Sounds scary - will back up everything that I can - then take it to the techy guys as soon as Covid will allow!

Thank you all very much for your help - it is much appreciated. According to Judd's link this problem is known as the 'Blue Screen of Death' - sounds dire!

Blue Screen of Death is dire because in a huge majority of cases, it is a fault that cannot be pinned down so rather than the techs waste more time trying to find the cause which increases the cost of repair, the techs will usually recommend that a new computer is purchased and that personal files on your hard drive will be transferred over to the new machine, things such as documents, pictures, videos, music.

The worst part of a BSOD (Blue screen of death) is when the fault happens randomly, it just happens when it want's to happen.

Being in the computer tech industry, over the years I have repaired many BSOD's, some have been very easy, some have been extremely hard BUT the one common factor in all of them is the initial tests in trying to pin point the fault.

Silver Tabby, one of the things a tech repair person will ask you to do initially before they get the machine is to see if you can replicate the fault. The tech will be wanting to see if the BSOD occurs every time a specific function is carried out. For examples sake, if you opened your internet browser and clicked to open a new tab, boom BSOD occurs. You try it again and boom, the BSOD occurs again. That is the kind of thing the tech person will be looking for. So carry on using your computer BUT this time pay specific close attention to what your doing and what your clicking on and take a note each time you get the BSOD. Then, look at your notes and see if there is anything obvious reoccurring. This information will help the tech people when you give them your machine to fix.
