"Works" that's a blast from the past. i didn't realise it was still around, I had a version for MS DOS instead of Wordstar.

Re: Word processing.

I recently got a new PC with Windows 10. I used my back up to transfer data but it wouldn't work with MS Works. I'm now stuck with the shambles of MS Office and had to take out a $10 a month MSoft payment. MS Works was much better.

No personal experience of using LibreOffice but people I know use it as an alternative to MS Works and MS Office without problems. Others on here might also use it and it's free to download so could save you $10 a month:

I do use LibreOffice (I used to teach its use) and it is excellent for most office suite users.

Personally I am stuck with MS Office because of its Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

I am too old or too lazy to learn Python, Java or even the new M$ Typescript so continue to need MS Ofiice for its VBA

Therein lies the problem with today's world. Change the operating system and your software no longer works.

Rather than buying new, I use WordPad, Windows 10's simplified version of word.

If I need anything posher, I simply copy and paste into my DTP package and go from there.

You are quite obviously well placed to know about LibreOffice. I know nothing about Microsoft or VBA as I use Apple Macs. What I did know was people who use LibreOffice are pleased with it, so thought I would pass that on if any help.

I've been learning all kinds of technology, computer systems and programs since 1982 and find I never stop learning. A time does come though where the enthusiasm does wane a little, perhaps that is my euphemism for "too old or too lazy". These days, in my mid-seventies, the 'old grey matter' doesn't seem to absorb / retain information quite as readily as it once did!

I think MS Office, Office 365 and VBA has been available for Apple Computers including Macs since the 1990s ( well, the Office Suite anyway).

Yes, you are correct. In fact Macs such as the 27” iMac I purchased for my work as a graphic designer before fully retiring, was dual-platform so could run both Mac and Windows programs. That meant installing the Windows operating system though. Having seen so many problems with M$ updates I decided against that. When self-employed any downtime sorting out computer problems is lost income so best avoided. Instead I found ways round opening files for publishing sent by Windows users. For some reason, despite requests, many just would not supply files as industry standard file types like PDFs.

Not long after purchasing the iMac a deal was had on a new MacBook Pro laptop where Microsoft Office:Mac / Office and student was part of the deal. The Microsoft Office was never used though,
by then it was mostly PhotoShop, InDesign and QuarkXpress, then I fully retired so that’s all history.
All that does remain is the ability to touch-type, probably the most useful skill remaining from those long-ago days.
