Garden Auger

Hi

I am on heavy clay and now have to be careful what I do.

If you have a cordless drill a garden auger is great for digging and planting.

Loads for sale on ebay and Amazon.

Just an example

Excuse me asking, but would you mind explaining how you 'dig' the flower beds, with a drill? I don't get it.

Re: Garden Auger

That's an interesting idea swimmy. Used to have a small rotavator which was a godsend for creating a fine tilth. We have sandy soil, so not sure how well it would have coped with clay.

Double digged before we laid turf, and it saved many hours of laborious sweat!

Re: Garden Auger

I was given one but I don't use it much however they are very expensive for what they are.

I think it would be pretty easy to make one (or rather something similar) out of a split, bent disc (say a small circular saw blade) and an old drill bit. I made my post hole diggers 40 years ago and these could be the same design on a much smaller scale.

Thank you. I can see what you mean now.
It makes holes much like a bulb planter does. It confused me when you said you use it for digging, instead of just making planting holes.

Re: Garden Auger

They had/have Rotavators/tillers for sale at a reasonable price at Screwfix. Can't comment on whether they are any good or not, but the reviews seem to be favourable.
