Not to mention expensive! Best leave it unguarded overnight and all the cargo will have been mysteriously off loaded and on sale in Egyptian souks. Leave it unguarded for a week and it'll have had a paint job, been given a new name, and be on sale in Port Alexandria. Sorted!

Re: Oooops! Suez Blocked

I just checked https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais...y:-31.7/zoom:2 (a fascinating website, by the way) and the Ever Given is still stuck. It looks like there are several tugs in the area, but the latest satellite imagery doesn't suggest that any are currently working to move it.

I talked to a friend who is a ship's captain and he thinks there is a lot more to the wind story because it makes no sense that the wind would blow the bow the way that it did. Though I didn't get into the specifics, he suspects an equipment malfunction and that the company is hoping to get away with blaming Mother Nature so they won't be liable for the losses of other ships.

It makes sense to me when I really think about it, but somehow the fact that only about 50 ships traverse the canal each day seems surprisingly low.

There was a bit more on this evening's news about it, the bulbous bow is stuck fast in the canal bank and they don't want to damage the hull so it might be several more days before it is free.

When I went back to the UK in the late 60s Suez was blocked anyway so the ship I was on had to travel via South Africa. I think that was a result of the 6 day war though.
