Yet the sentences for dog fights and dangerous dogs in events are derisory .
Why don't judges impose sentences that hurt !
Dogs are stolen all the time and if you wonder why sometimes old spayed dogs are taken ?
They are used as bait dogs so someone’s elderly defenceless pet will be thrown to be killed by a fighting dog .
Your average citizen does not do illegal dog fights these are attended by people who are the lowliest of the low .
The dogs are not at fault they know no better .
You can imagine the scenarios with the two dogs who killed the old lady . Probably unsocialised - and big potentially dangerous dogs need a lot of socialising .( There is a reason police dogs are ‘walked ‘ out ie live with a family for a years before training - so that they know not to eat children and other inoffensive members of the public) Locked in a shed or back yard bored and frustrated . A flimsy fence a frail 85 year old she had no chance .
Hi

There is another reason, a very common one, used by drug dealers as a weapon.

It is not very pleasant, the dogs have to go before you get to the owner.

|It is not the dogs fault.

I have to be honest here and say that my terrier dog does the same. Its defence barking because she was attacked when she was young. Its scary for both me and the other dog owners that she barks at, and I keep her on a tight lead, avoiding all other dogs that I see in the distance. One time I took her up to a dog that I knew was "safe" and she was fine, best pals after that. We hired a trainer at £80 a day to get something done, but it wasn't in her own territory - it was in another park with different smells, different dogs, and she was good as gold! All I do now is walk by the dog, apologise profusely to the owner and keep calm. It works for the most part, but only because she is small. Any other tips would be most welcome!

Re: Pensioner killed by dogs.

Pixie little dogs are notorious for barking at other dogs .partly out of fear as you say but sometimes because they don’t know they are a little dog - they are a wolf inside ! Or maybe like many terriors especially Jack Russell’s they have little dog syndrome .There are two in the village that now have an asbo due to their habit of rushing out and nipping unsuspecting people on the ankle . They haven’t bit me because I speak quite sharply oI stop that and I stamp my feet at them ! Of course I would not be so confident if they were two German shepherds !
With your little dog I would try the following .
First establish what sort of treats she really loves .
I find strong cheese cut into little bits is good and also dried fish bits like ‘woofs ‘ sprats my dog loves them and he is not food oriented . For the ultimate treat Tesco’s cocktail sausages cut into little pieces - no dog can resist them - but health wise full of nitrates !
So put your treats in your pocket when you go out .
When you see a dog coming in the distance keep you dog on a short but not tight lead . She will feel your own anxiety through the lead animals can pick up on body language in a flash .
Before the dogs gets too close crouch down and distract your dog with treats pet her make her sit and say good girl reward .
Stay like this until the other dog comes by continue to distract her if she starts barking say firmly quiet ! If she obeys treat immediately! Keep doing this until she associates a dog passing with good stuff not fear .
Soon you will not need to crouch down just distract with a treat keeping her attention while passing the other dog .
I suspect she behaved with the trainer because the trainer excluded confidence . It’s often easier if the animal isn’t yours .
Children are the sometimes similar they misbehave much more with their parents !
Persist she will soon come around

Aww thank you so much Muddy! Yes she is very treat orientated, and otherwise well trained and biddable. She just goes a bit nuts when she sees other dogs. I'll get some of those treats you mentioned and have a go with this over the next few days!

Too many dogs are treated like babies.

Dogs need boundaries and to know not to cross them.

"A woman, a dog and a walnut tree -- the harder you beat them, the better they be.". Well according to Aesop such is the case, I'm not too sure.

Not sure about the walnut tree, wouldn't DARE with the Memsaab, our long dead Border Collie would have been broken hearted --- but it's an old proverb!

To be serious dogs must know their place in the pack at all times but they are pack animals and will always defend what they believe is their pack.
