Future of the Monarchy

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/other...er/ar-BB1fvl41

A thoughtful man who devoted his life to serving the institution, himself a migrant and a refugee (albeit a rich one), Philip well understood how Britain was changing. He might not have been woke, but neither was he asleep.

So Philip was a moderniser, so far as he could be. While he was as wilful and determined as his image suggested, as often as not that meant impatience with the traditional ways of the royal court. Much of this was a natural reaction to being denatured –emasculated even – by sometimes made-up “traditions”, such as being denied the right to give his children his surname, or acquiring the title of “Prince Consort”. Where he could, though, in his public role, he sought to reform the monarchy – for its own good, and to make himself and the institution “useful”.
His title to pass onto Edward, the Earl of Wessex.

Best of all end this offensive worthless antediluvian nonsense.Scrap the whole thing, get rid of the loathsome upper house, and introduce proportional representation to bring at least an element of democratic government because by heavens we need and deserve it together with a written constitution.

The royality attract a lot of visitors to the UK don't forget. They bring a lot of foreign money into the country.

Take a look at France ,they did away with their royals and now have nothing like us to offer

The RF do NOT attract a lot of money into the UK. That is a load of pure BS. Our historical and architectural sites do - the RF do not.

Familial connections to "the home land" attract tourists but none of that has any connection with the RF, the biggest benefit scroungers in all times. Good grief, the Windsor's have very much closer connections with Germany than Great Britain.

While this is true, what do you do with the Royal Air Force? The Royal Navy etc? The fact that everyone swears allegiance to the queen doesn't quite sit right with me - if you fight, you fight for the country not one family, but that's how they keep the likes of us in our place.

Its ok, DonkeyMan....this is the future of the monarchy we are on, not prince philip has died. I wouldn't be so crass as to discuss this stuff on that thread! But he was alright actually - he was direct, both in mannerisms and speech, which I respect. Maybe didn't like some of what he said ie to a scottish driving instructor he asked how he kept the learners sober enough to pass the test! But anyway.....

Say what you like about the institution but when the Queen dies the soul of the nation will die with her. Even those who despise the monarchy will feel some sadness.

I think he liked a good wind up because of course the people he spoke to couldn't really be rude to him so that made him ever more daring and direct.
