Thought it was a scam !

Had a letter today from virgin money asking me for all my details, passport, birth certs every thing. I don't have an account with them so assumed it was a scam and rang them only to find it's a pension. Apparently it's been arranged by my employer (no notification from him) and I have to try to opt out of it but they were not sure I could as I am in a protected job ????? I am a part time office cleaner doing 12 1/2 hours a week at NMW how am I supposed to afford a pension ?

Answers on a post card preferably with a donation to help pay for this one

Surely he should have asked you first ! Not just go ahead, don't accept what Virgin says that you can't get out of it - not true, just don't sign anything

Re: Thought it was a scam !

This is to make it easier for you to start saving. If you are eligible, the earlier you start saving the more you’re likely to have when you reach retirement.

Saving into a workplace pension is easy – you don’t have to do anything as you will be automatically enrolled by your employer.

You can opt out if you want to, but that means losing out on employer and government contributions – and if you stay in, you’ll have your own pension that you receive when you retire.

Your employer will need to enrol you into a workplace pension scheme if you:

Are not already in one
Are aged between 22 and State Pension age
Earn more than £10,000 a year
Work in the UK

So you need to opt out if you don't want to be in it Julie. It is a new law that has been coming into force for some months, starting with companies that employ lots of people and then down to small companies

Re: Thought it was a scam !

I don't earn anywhere near £10,000 a year and at my age I would need to save hundreds a month to make any sort of meaningful pension. If I earned it I might think about it but I don't even earn enough to pay tax these days.

Re: Thought it was a scam !

OK but how do I afford to pay for it out of a job where I earn less than £5,000 a year ? I use my money to pay for our groceries, clothes and Grace's school needs. I can either starve the family, go naked or take her out of school. Decisions decisions decisions
