George. Clarkes Council House Scandel

On channel four .

Really excellent programme .

George Clarke reports on council housing and plans to build his own council estate next year .

Amazing it shows the social housing in Vienna ( where two thirds of the people live in social housing ) which is fantastic.

There is no sigma in Vienna in social housing .

It's considered the norm and is of better quality that the private sector .

I wonder why can't we have this here ?

How many dossers and scum tenants are there in Vienna? Can we assume that they actually look after their homes?

The council development shown was immaculate .
Not everyone who lives in a council house is scum or a dosser.
George Clarke himself was brought up in a council house and his mother still lives in it.

Missed that one, will have to watch it on catch-up.

sigma? Wasn't that a Mitsubishi car some years back?

We probably can't because a lot of the social housing (council housing) was sold off, many people jumped in to get a good deal and the housing stock was never replaced.

Quite agree but it needs the political will to do it and that just seems to be lacking over recent years. It didn't help at the time that money received from those sales couldn't, as far as I know, be used to build replacement housing stock!

Will watch it though, sounds interesting.

The money from the sale of council houses goes to central government and about a third is returned to the local council apparently .

That was a lot of years ago now. What I do recall is some people were buying not only their own council houses but somehow also buying the council house their parents lived in. Wasn't there some ruling that money from the sale of council houses could not be used to replace that housing stock which had been sold off?
