The turnout was 59.7%, down from 74.6% at the general election, but it is the highest for a by-election since Winchester in 1997.

Polls closed at 22:00 BST and the result is expected in the early hours of Friday.

Brecon and Radnorshire by-election: Lib Dems beat Conservatives

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-49200636

Jane Dodds overturned an 8,038 majority by Conservative Chris Davies to win by 1,425 votes.

Mr Davies stood again after being unseated by a petition that followed his conviction for a false expenses claim.

Labour were beaten into the fourth place by The Brexit Party.
Jane Dodds - Lib Dem - 13,826 (43.4%)

Chris Davies - Con - 12,401 (39%)

Des Parkinson - Brexit - 3,331 (10.5%)

Tom Davies - Labour - 1,680 (5.3%)

Lady Lily The Pink - Loony - 334 (1%)

Liz Phillips - UKIP - 242 (0.8%)

-------------------------------------

Lib Dem Majority - 1,425

Re: The Brecon and Radnorshire By-Election

It seems that the Brexit party split the vote for the Tories allowing the LD's (who negotiated with remain parties to put up one candidate) to get in and reduce the Tory majority to 1.

Labour had a particularly bad night ...

Re: The Brecon and Radnorshire By-Election

Well it's fairly obvious the the LibDems did a deal with the Greens and others to avoid splitting the Remain vote
The Cons & TBP behaved slightly more honourably and suffered accordingly

However, the overall result shows

Leave = 49,5%
Remain = 43,4%

Moreover, it would seem that Leavers are willing to accept a No Deal Brexit

As for Labour, obviously a very low vote.
Presumably this is because no-one is keen on the direction Labour have been going in recent years, or they don't know what Labour's policies are, especially on Brexit, or both

Re: The Brecon and Radnorshire By-Election

Interesting comments from www.order-order.com

The reason for the by - election was that the Conservative MP Chris Davies was deselected owing to dodgy expenses claims, yet he was allowed to stand again by Theresa May

A strange move you might think, but from Theresa The Betrayer's point of view it makes sense -

If he wins, there is a Remainer MP in the HoC
If he loses, it would almost certainly be to the LibDems, who clearly want to Remain

Thus for a Remainer like Theresa The Betrayer it's a win - win situation as either result will weaken Brexit

I think Labour are finished Meg. I can't see them ever coming back unless they get rid of "the beard".

Voters expressed their contempt by not voting, hardly a resounding victory for Lib-Dems.

Re: The Brecon and Radnorshire By-Election

Whatever possessed the Conservative Party to allow Chris Davies, convicted of fiddling his expenses, to stand again in a seat he was responsible for there having to be another election. Did'nt the local party have a say in this dumb decision!? Surely there was an honest candidate the party could have found from somewhere. I'm surprised the cheating bugger got as many votes as he did. I certainly would'nt have voted for him, even if I was a die hard tory!!
