While it was the communist USSR Russia was pretty crappy but now it's the Russian Federation for ordinary folk in many ways life's better there than in the much vaunted USA.

Whilst l would agree that life in Russia has improved for the
ordinary citizen Todgy, l dont think that you can compare
the two countries at all, allthough usa is far from perfect!
The biggest improvement in Russia has been mainly in
more freedom for the citizens and not so much on the
economic front, but imo that will slowly come?

It's going to take time but if one benchmarked the collapse of the USSR with the equivalent point in (say) American history an interesting picture emerges.

The first difficulty is what should be taken as an equivalent or even near equivalent point and on that I would be keen to take your input.

As a straw-man I'll suggest somewhere around the early 1930's.

That would mean that it was the mid 1980's when the dissolution of the USSR became inevitable.

Working on that basis Russia today should be of a similar state to America of 50 years ago when consumerism was on a very rapid rise and investments in stocks and shares were very much on the increase even for ordinary people, and actually that is within spitting distance from life in Russia today.

We have family living in Russia and last visited them two years past. To be honest given the choice of having to relocate to America or Russia it would be a no-brainer and it would NOT be to America.

Well you have the advantage of me Todgy with your prsonal
experience of Russia!
Did you travel much while you were there, or were you
static? I ask because both countries are very large and
conditions could vary greatly depending on where you are?
As you know very well happens in a tiny country like uk even.
Did you speak to a large cross section of the population?
These questions apply to both countries!
Most people l know who have come back from usa have
been impressed by it, but lm not sure if those people asked
Questions of the locals while they were there!
However it would be interesting to hear further comparisons
of the two countries from you?

Re: Deflation and Recession

Hi

Trumps trade war with China is having a global effect.

We are not immune from it.

It has nothing to do with Brexit at all, but it is affecting our Economy.

Hi

We are in for a rough time.

The people who blame it all on Brexit seriously annoy me.

Since the USSR collapsed we've visited every eight months or so. Some of our tribe live just outside Moscow which today is on a per with any European city with people living high on the hog, well paid secure jobs, very nice if expensive accommodation, a LOT less crime than in London, and the only real threat to public safety coming from islamic terrorists from places like the Chechnya Republic who want to take the place over and don't like being treated as such low life should be treated by russians.

Another place we've got family is a few miles outside former Stalingrad. Very similar there other than its effin cold in the winter and swarming with flow and things with stings in the summer.

We've spent time in a couple of growing winter sports villages in the South East, other than language it could be in Austria or Germany, even down to the food on offer.

Other than really 'orrible 'eat in the summer and brass monkeys time in the winter there's really nothing in the way of a downside there and now the growing number of foreigners vacationing there!

Your response on the contrary is just the usual evasion of an awkward question .

We must assume would not like to live in China .
