What were you doing in 1984?

Yes I choose the year because of George Orwell's novel
I was 26 years old. Single. Teaching primary school. 1984 was probably the best class I had. We clicked from the start.
Learning piano.
Doing 10km fun runs.
Drinking on Friday nights. Oops drinking and driving. What an idiot.
No girlfriend but life was still good.

That was the year that opened my eyes to the power of the state. The government using the police to subjugate law abiding citizens.(In the UK,not Oz)
(so quite relevant to George Orwell, then)

I was 32. Early years of my own practice. I was also playing in a band and as well, in the very early years of my relationship with my now wife of 30 years. As one would expect, Prime minister THatcher was seen here by conservatives as a strong leader with firm policies; by centrists as having unnecessarily harsh social policies and by those on the left as a monster. That's about it.

I need to read up on Thatcher. I used to be a leftie and would have hated her at the time. She wasn't really a monster though was she?

No. If she were still with us Brexit would have happened two years ago!

She made some very unpopular choices but she certainly got things done. Heaven forbid we should have another 'Falklands' because our current useless lot couldn't fight their way out of an open door!

Got dumped, the one and only time, a necessary experience, worth more than a formal education, pretty sure it was 84, Careless Whisper was on the radio.

Re: What were you doing in 1984?

I was planning on moving house. Although I loved the house I was in, the area had gone downhill. In a short space of time - I had been flooded, burgled, and attempted burgled. Plus I had changed work place to the other side of town. Took me two years to finally move - but the planning began in 1984.
