It has come from Asia via America to us. first spotted it 2004 and is destroying our own native ladybirds.

A beautiful creature. It's a shame it is going to cause us problems.

Re: invasive ladybird

Nice clear pictures RS.
This little bug is called the 'Harlequin' ladybird.

" These cannibalistic ladybirds were first realised to have reached the UK in 2004 when they were seen in Essex and have since spread as far afield as the tip of Cornwall and the Shetland Islands, making it the fastest alien invasion of the UK on record. Grey squirrels, American mink, ring-necked parakeets and muntjac deer are advancing at a rate far behind them."

More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct. "

Maybe our native ladybird will be the next.

I photographed the one below a number of years ago. Someone told me at the time that sightings of these ought to be reported, so I did. As far as I know, it was never arrested.

Re: invasive ladybird

Yep looks like one of the many variations of Harlequin ladybirds Mart, they eat a lot of aphids.

I found this pic of some of the variants with a larvae.

Re: invasive ladybird

That's quite a gathering Nom. I have read of cases where there are so many of them that they infest houses and can be difficult to get rid of.
