When referring to an older person, with ‘really, really lovely’, l could it see it being followed with the word ‘Bless’, from a sickly, smiling face!

Now that really is, condescending!

We don't hear the expression "really really lovely" here...I think if someone said that to me, I would feel quite good.

We get called "dear" a lot when we are my age. It used to bug me, but not anymore as I realize they are just trying to be nice and make me feel good. The young ones don't know what to say to us.....they don't realize they will be in my shoes someday, having a hard time getting old....it is not easy.

When people called my mother dear, she called them dear back. (Saves trying to remember names of course.) Not necessarily age-related.

Our Down's Syndrome son (33), is a cheeky chap, he always says, 'Yes dear', in condescending tones, when I am telling him something!
