Re: Coronavirus: Face coverings to be mandatory on public transport

Face masks weren't required on public transport before because hardly anyone was using it so could social distance easily. I think the governments figures was something like 95% less people are using public transport during the lockdown.

Now people are going back to work and using public transport, people need to use face masks.

Sounds logical to me

We are testing more people, so getting more positive and negative results.

Exactly that Bread, its quite a logical requirement imo!
One thing l read somewhere,(the relly l think) , was that passengers
could be fined for not wearing a mask?
I disaegree with this, lnthink the miscreants should not be allowed
to even board the bus or train at all without a mask on!
People would soon learn to conform if they lose their means of
transport?
Fining implies that the person without a mask has allready gained
access to the transport thus nullifying the effects of the measures?
Plus all the legal complications that fining entails?
So to keep it simple, NO MASK? NO ENTRY!!

This is governments policy soon. There will be extra police and thousands of volunteers helping and advising people on wearing masks on public transport. There was a good interview with Grant Shapps on LBC this morning - its seems very well thought out.

Yes Bread, it may be that the policing you mention may well be
needed due to the densness of some of the population which
makes what should be a self regulating regime impossible??

Why is the UK late on facemasks, Nick Ferrari asks Transport Secretary

As the government finally made facemasks compulsory on public transport, Nick Ferrari asked Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary why the UK always seems to be playing catch-up with other countries.

New rules starting on the 15th June mean masks will have to be worn on all trains, tubes, buses and trams in England to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking to Grant Shapps, Nick asked why the government have decided to implement this rule now.

He said: "The sense is we're late to the party again. We, the United Kingdom, was late to lockdown. There's a sense we're late to quarantine and we're late on facemasks.

"Why are the United Kingdom always playing catch-up?"

Mr Shapps insisted: "That's a mischaracterisation to say that. We were several weeks behind, in particular Europe on where the disease was up to. So of course it's always going to be the case that we're several weeks behind the next measure."

Nick asked him: "Why don't we try to get ahead of the game?"

The Transport Minister stated: "Giving the example of transport and the compulsory wearing of facemasks, transport's been largely empty. 95% of passengers haven't been there and maintaining social distancing, by and large, has been extremely straight-forward.

"We know though that on 15th June, non-essential retail and secondary schools reopen and we know there will be increased pressure.

"The message will carry on - please don't take public transport if you can avoid it. But we know it will be a bit busier, so it seems sensible to give people the warning now that you'll need to wear a cloth face covering to be able to use the transport system."
What a rubbish answer - a "facemask" policy would have been a lot easier to trial and implement while the transport system was largely unused - now it will be almost impossible to "police" ..... e.g. more than 3 million Londoners use public transport every day .....

Re: Coronavirus: Face coverings to be mandatory on public transport

If memory serves me right the wearing of face masks was mentioned a good three or four weeks ago ... in public places, though not specifically on public transport.

I think the idea was jettisoned because it was pointed out that the public would be manically trying to chase down the same supplies that the NHS desperately needed.

That's been the trouble all along ... insufficient ventilators, masks, PPE, test kits, volunteers.

It's been, and still is, a governmental shambles .....

Re: Coronavirus: Face coverings to be mandatory on public transport

Locally, in San Diego, people have been wearing facemasks for the last several months.

Buses only allow people to use the rear door and are not allowed to sit up front near the driver. Relatively few people are using the buses.

Not allowed in the grocery stores without a mask. No exceptions. At the entrance, people can use hand sanitizers. Shopping cart handles are wiped down with alcohol before customer picks one up. There are large heavy duty sheets of plastic between the customers and the cashier.

Seems to be working as there are few deaths. Only 288 deaths in metro San Diego area.

If given a mask to wear, ok with that. eta no use unless you keep mask in place, not pulling it down as some have been shown on TV.
