Thanks swimfeeders and apologies for the inaccuracy, I looked to find the date on that news item but must have missed it, 'Specsavers' need a visit. Things change so quickly and I don't understand much beyond the basics which is why I don't tend to get involved in the Brexit threads.

The thing is ....

The EU has an equal footing with every other WTO member - they have 1 seat that represents their 27 countries within it.

So when it comes the vote, they have the same single vote as anyone else. I hope Fox gets the top job, its about time the WTO actually did something in favour of new trading initiatives, updates to the rules and a fresh set of eyes looking for opportunities.

I don't see Hogan or Mandelson as visionaries ...

Wrong, the EU as a member has one vote, all the 27 are individual members too, bringing the number of votes to 28 (but it depends on the subject)

I doubt there will be much enthusiasm for the job, considering you will be up against trump.

The WTO has consistently been attacked by Mr Trump’s administration, which has strongly criticised its over-reach and blamed it for allowing China to practise unfair trade. The appellate body, the highest authority in the organisation's dispute settlement process, ceased to function late last year after the US blocked the appointment of new judges to replace two who retired.
Under Mr Azevêdo, the organisation has deliberately kept a low profile during the coronavirus pandemic, staying largely silent over the global rash of export restrictions on medical equipment. Citing its lack of authority in the area, the organisation has declined to intervene publicly. The blocks on exports have set off a global procurement scramble and further increased trade tensions.* Despite this, there has been growing disgruntlement on Capitol Hill in recent weeks, with two separate pieces of legislation*calling for the US to withdraw from the WTO. Both Democrat and Republican lawmakers have argued that coronavirus has exposed the need to protect US sovereignty, which they see as being damaged by the loss of US manufacturing capability to China.*

Nope

The EU trades as a block and so is 1 member. The members states although members of the WTO themselves, surrendered their individual memberships to the EU as the EU trades as a single block.

Ta da !

The WTO is there for trade between countries without formal trade agreements, so they can trade on the rules agreed by the membership of the WTO.

As the UK is formalising a trade deal with the USA at the moment and we already have an MRA in place I hardly think your argument has any merit.

But nice googling.

You're wrong. The EU wants itself to be excluded from the number of votes.
Normally, the EU is*counted as 29 WTO members: its 28 member states plus the EU itself. This explains why the WTO’s membership is currently*164. (Note: this is a pre brexit text)
As a result, the EU itself and its member states are all WTO members. The present number is 28 member states + the EU = 29, which brings the WTO’s membership to 164. This is not disputed.

The problem is about counting ratifications (or “acceptances”) of amendments, including the Trade Facilitation Agreement of the*WTO Agreement. The EU insists it should be counted as 28 (the number of its member states) rather than the 29 (including the EU itself) that appear in*the list of the WTO’s 164 members.

Oh? If two members have a dispute on trade and put it before the wto to settle, to what written document (= agreement) does it refer to? You see how stupid your answer is?

You should do some googling. Might increase your knowledge a bit!

Can you stop talking bollocks please ?

The EU is a single WTO member and is represented as a single block of 27 countries.
