it may be a good thing if more people stay off the roads after midnight. The country lanes where I live are unlit anyway apart from the moon

My beef is when people get used to it, the councils are likely to make it permanent.

You know, I think it's a good idea. Switching off street lights in towns, villages, council estates and hamlets say, after midnight, would save a great deal of money, but not on motorways or other major roads.Quieter places have no real need for street lighting which, at 1000W per column lighting, would save an enormous amount.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to be alone on the streets after midnight anyway. I know I wouldn't.
