Wonderful idea Bruce, looking forward to seeing you on Dragons Den.

Re: Lights Out !

I think it's a very good idea. So long as the money saved went back into the council coffers and we all feel the benefit (which will not happen)
When we first lived here, every other street light went off after midnight, which we preferred.

Anyway, what are you all doing walking out after midnight? Where on earth are you walking to?

Sounds like a good idea in theory but there would be considerable cost involoved. Also these type of lights break down a fair bit so more maintenance and cost. You also have the problem of flashing lights keeping people awake. My bedroom is very close to the street light and if that was switching on and off all night it would keep me awake for sure .

On the Island, street lights have always been turned off at midnight - just the ones on street corners remain lit (when they're working!) and I can't say it's ever bothered me. Once we get outside the towns, there are no street lights at all on the roads between the towns and villages and shift workers manage just fine.

I've even gone down to the beach after midnight just to see the night skies that normally can't be seen because of all the reflected light - just took a really good torch!

Re: Lights Out !

I surpose if they are going to switch all the lights out after midnight we will all have to invest in luminescent jackets and trousers to make sure that we can be seen. Just imagine seeing all those bright yellow or orange jackets wandering around when you are driving home after midnight.

Seriously though where we live if like me you sometimes are travelling out at 2 am going down the road and people going home from the pubs or clubs you will certainly have to have your wits about you.

Same thought, if people wear dark clothing - it will be a nightmare, negotiating around them ....

The thing I struggle with is not being able to see where the kerb is - I've stumbled off many times and into the road (mind you, no cars coming luckily) so the trick is to take a torch, drivers will see that as well.

C,mon Geoff, 90% of night workers drive or are part of a 'pool' of drivers.
Statistically you are more likely to be mugged between 4pm and 7pm for your mobile.
House robberies are mostly daytime too!
Or do you mean, not tripping up on uneven pavements?
What makes it unsafe?
